Couple launches pizza food truck in the parking lot of the Powder House

Pancetta, sheep’s milk cheese and sun-dried tomatoes are just a few of the ingredients atop pies at a recently-opened pizza food truck in Bend.

God of Pizza began food service in the parking lot of the Powder House last month with a menu that includes artisan pies named after Greek gods.

And this is one pizza place this GO! reporter recommends trying.

There’s also not just a red sauce on the menu, but a smokey red sauce, a yellow heirloom tomato sauce and a pesto sauce.

The exterior of the crust is crispy, with an interior that has a doughy consistency, reminiscent of focaccia bread and the combinations of ingredients are thoughtfully curated. There are also tried-and-true options such as pepperoni ($16), seven-cheese ($5) and Italian sausage ($16).

Setting sail as a catering business

Owners Daniel (Danny) McGovern and Hailey Buker-McGovern waded into the waters of the food industry with a catering business over the summer. As the couple catered weddings, they received questions from guests about their food truck and where it was located, which made establishing a home for the business a natural next step, Danny said.

Instead of olive oil, the pizza crust is made with butter, Danny continued. The couple is developing the crust with Sparrow Bakery to ensure it is crispy and golden brown.

Divine pizzas

I tried “Psilofyer’s bliss” ($24), a pie named after a god symbolic of community and healing, and it was a delightful experience. Springy wild mushrooms were paired with thinly sliced red onion and basil. A blend of crumbly black truffle cheese and aged Grana Padano cheese (similar to Parmesan-Reggiano) added depth to the flavors but was not overbearing. The yellow heirloom tomatoes in the sauce shone underneath the layers of crumbly cheese with the chunkiness of the tomatoes still visible.

For those who need another reason to eat pizza, Danny will be the first to champion its health benefits. According to a post on the business’s Facebook page, sheep’s milk is a healthy source of vitamins and minerals, contributing toward a well-balanced diet. Pizza also has an abundance of protein, Danny said.

God of Pizza hits the mark, offering a new spot along Century Drive to indulge in this Italian cuisine.

“Italian food is the best food in the world. I’m Irish, but I love Italian food,” Danny said. “It’s comforting — from cannolis to lasagna and everything in between.”

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-friendly options are available and the owners are happy to accommodate requests to add or remove toppings.

More food trucks are to come in the parking lot of the Powder House, as owner Todd McGee plans to build a tap house with an outdoor space for multiple food trucks.
