- Construction is well underway on the new BlackStrap Industries Inc. headquarters building in Bend.
Project name: Midway Campus
Address: 565/575 SE Ninth St.
Developer: BlackStrap Industries Inc.
General Contractor: Overland Company
Architect: Tekneek Architecture
Cost of the project: Over $16 million
Project details: The Bend-based outdoor gear manufacturer is developing a 66,000-square-foot, three-building campus at the northwest corner of Ninth Street and Wilson Avenue in the Larkspur neighborhood. The first building will be BlackStrap’s headquarters and include a warehouse and office space for the company. The other two buildings are intended to be a coffee shop with co-working office space above and another large building with office space and storage potential.
Abe Shehadeh, founder and CEO of BlackStrap Industries Inc., said he plans to rent the spaces out to an expanding local coffee company and another local outdoor company — which he’s being particular about. The 16-year-old mountain lifestyle brand has moved 10 times since opening in 2008, and Shehadeh wants the campus to be its new home and the hub of Bend’s outdoor community.
“This is our opportunity to finally put roots down,” he said. “The goal is to build an outdoor community in the middle of town.”
Shehadeh said the campus will also have an outdoor event space with a stage and eating area at its center. The space will be used to host community events and fundraisers like the BlackStrap Block Party in November 2019, which Shehadeh said had 8,000 attendees, Mt. Bachelor ski area, 10 Barrel Brewing Co. and others in attendance, and benefited local nonprofit Oregon Adaptive Sports.
BlackStrap currently operates out of an eastside office, at 1305 SE Armour Road, that Shehadeh called a box. He said the new building could house over 100 employees: a significant expansion for the 40-employee company.
Ty Rawlins, Overland Company president, said they broke ground in November 2022 and his crews started building in February 2024. The design uses light industrial, flex product with pre-engineered metal building as the basis for construction, Rawlins said.
BlackStrap’s building is expected to be completed in June 2025, with the rest of the campus to be done in October 2025.
