Gone are the days when it was easy to find a cheap meal. Thankfully, these restaurants in Bend and Sunriver still offer menu items that ring in around $11.
Here are seven eateries that offer a satisfying meal without breaking the bank.
Axel’s Taco Shop
Diners are raving about the carne asada tacos at Axel’s Taco Shop, which held its grand opening in Bend’s Reed South on June 23. The Latino family-owned restaurant is open every day of the week, with hours that stretch from 6 a.m. until midnight and into the early morning hours on Friday and Saturday. Traditional Mexican dishes include burritos, tacos, nachos, menudo and pozole. Tacos start at $3.75 and most burritos ring in around $11. Axel’s Taco Shop; 21163 SE Reed Market Road, Suite 100; 541-241-9979; 6 a.m.-12 a.m. Sunday-Thursday, 6 a.m.-2 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m.-1 a.m. Saturday: $3.75-$16
Dandy’s Drive-In
Burgers and shakes have glided toward customers on roller skates at Dandy’s Drive-In since 1968. Very little has changed at this drive-in over the past half a century, which feels like a nod to a bygone era. The “Little Dandy” is $6 with a fifth-pound patty, the classic Dandy burger with a third-pound patty is $7.50 and a honey-crusted chicken corn dog costs $4. Dandy’s Drive-In; 1334 NE Third St., Bend; 541-382-6141; 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m. daily; $4-$20.25
MidCity SmashedBurger
Another joint transporting diners to a simpler time is the MidCity SmashedBurger food cart, now parked outside the Waypoint Hotel on Third Street. The original “Smashy Boi” is $6 for two beef patties smashed under a cast-iron press with melted cheese on a Franz Bakery bun. The food cart was named Portland’s best smash burger by The Oregonian in 2021. The Bend food cart is now serving its smash burgers alongside the recently opened Hosmer Bar, a zero-proof-forward concept with a focus on mocktails. Dump City Dumplings
A serving of dim sum is approximately three dishes at Dump City Dumplings, with plates that range from $4-$10 and are perfect for sharing. Sandwiches such as teriyaki, crisp pork and grilled mushroom ring in at an affordable $8. The brick-and-mortar on Galveston Avenue is hosting locals’ nights on Thursdays with live music and $1 off classic dumplings. The cart will also be at Summer Fest Friday through Sunday, Cascade Equinox Festival and all concerts at Hayden Homes Amphitheater this summer.
