Free First Day Hike at Cove Palisades State Park, Tumalo State Park, La Pine State Park

The Deschutes River flows through Tumalo State Park.  

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is offering a free, guided First Day Hike at Culver’s Cove Palisades State Park, Tumalo State Park and La Pine State Park at 10 a.m. Jan 1.

Hikes are also offered at Smith Rock State Park.

In collaboration with America’s State Parks, the event is being held at 30 state parks throughout the state.

The Cove Palisades hike begins at the top of the hill in the Crooked River Campground overflow parking lot. Participants will hike through the Crooked River wetlands onto the Rim Trail, from which you can view Mount Jefferson and the Three Sisters. Refreshments will be served at the overlook.

This hike may not be suitable for people with breathing difficulties, strollers or trouble with uneven terrain. Restrooms are located in the parking lot and in the camp. Friendly dogs are welcome on 6-foot leashes.

The Tumalo State Park hike is a 3-mile round trip hike along the Deschutes River with easy to medium terrain. Hikers should meet at the day-use fee machine located near the entrance. The hike is on the Deschutes River Trail. The trail is narrow, has a dirt surface with protruding rocks and is not Americans with Disability Act accessible. Pets are welcome on a leash. A portable toilet is available.

The La Pine hike is a 3-mile hike on the Deschutes River Loop Trail. Registration is required at the Oregon State Parks website. The hike begins at the McGregor Memorial Overlook. The hike is on a dirt trail. Dogs are welcome on 6-foot leashes. Strollers are not recommended.

For all three hikes, participants are encouraged to dress warmly, in hiking shoes or boots that can handle getting wet. Water and snacks are encouraged, as well as a camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing.

The day use parking fee is waived.
