Redmond Fire & Rescue has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Oregon Department of the State Fire Marshal to help local residents improve defensible space around their property.

Creating defensible space around the home typically means cutting back bushes and trees within 5 feet of the house and removing other flammable materials from the yard near the home. The goal is to have fewer spots where flying embers can land can set a house on fire.

Owners of residential properties can request a defensible space assessment through the Redmond Fire & Rescue website, rdmfire.org. Once the request is received, Fire & Rescue staff will visit the property and make recommendations for the type of work that is needed.
