Lava Bears serve up victory

REDMOND – Bend High won three of the four matches in both singles and doubles competition en route to a 6-2 girls tennis victory over Redmond Thursday afternoon at Sam Johnson Park.
The Lava Bears improved to 5-2 on the season and are 4-0 against Intermountain Conference opponents.
The Panthers dropped to 5-2 overall, 1-1 against IMC foes.
Bend High got convincing victories at No. 1 singles from Kaylee Thomas (6-1, 6-0) and at No. 4 singles from Marie Beardsley (6-1, 6-2).
The Bears’ No. 1 doubles team of Caitlin Conrad and Sarah Smith were 6-2, 6-1 winners.
”Both our number ones (singles and doubles) looked good,” said Bend High coach Kevin Collier. ”We’re pretty pleased with the way Kaylee is coming along.”
Redmond got victories at No. 3 singles by Mikki Volz (6-2, 6-2 over Shawna Miller) and at No. 4 doubles by Aurelie Hachez and Claire Adams (4-6, 6-4, 7-3).
Bend will join Mountain View in co-hosting a girls tournament Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
At Bend High, the Lava Bears, Klamath Union and Tualatin will play round-robin matches at 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Mountain View will host round-robin action with Crook County and defending 4A girls state team champion North Medford at the same times.
The championship matches in singles and doubles is set for 3 p.m. at Bend High. The third-place matches will be held at Juniper Park, and Mountain View will host matches for fifth place. In other Thursday action:

PRINEVILLE – The Cowgirls won three singles matches and two doubles matches – all in straight sets – en route to posting an Intermountain Conference victory over visiting Mountain View. Crook County’s Megan Rodgers downed Lindsay Greer 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Kristin Wortman and Rachel Wortman beat Amy Smith and Lori Tabor at No. 1 doubles. The Cowgirls improved to 5-0-1.

The Lava Bears won one singles match and three doubles matches, claiming victory over the Panthers thanks to their slim 9-8 advantage in sets won. Bend (6-2 overall) has won three team decisions this season by 4-4 scores determined by sets won. Redmond (3-2) lost for the second straight time 9-8 in sets. Redmond’s Scott Marshall defeated Joey Serrapede at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Brandon Parker and Patrick Wurtz posted a decisive No. 1 doubles victory for the Lava Bears, 6-0, 6-0.
