Bend woman pleads guilty to kidnapping

A Bend woman has pleaded guilty to second-degree kidnapping and unlawful use of a weapon after police said she held her husband at gunpoint in their home after she came to suspect he was being unfaithful.
Wanda R. Marlatt, 48, made the plea on Friday after she and her attorney, Valerie Wright, agreed on a plea bargain with Deschutes County District Attorney Mike Dugan.
In exchange for the guilty plea, Dugan agreed to drop two counts of attempted murder and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon.
Marlatt is scheduled to be sentenced by Deschutes County Circuit Court Judge Alta Brady on Dec. 10. At maximum, Marlatt could serve five years and 10 months in prison. However, Deputy District Attorney Cliff Lu said Brady could order less prison time because Marlatt has no criminal history.
Lu said Marlatt was guilty of second-degree kidnapping because she pointed a loaded hunting rifle at her husband and forced him to march down a hall in their home at 63595 Hunters Circle in Bend on Oct. 20, 2000.
”Kidnap means she intended to interfere with his liberty by forcing him to move from one place to another,” Lu said.
”This was more than just to scare him. She loaded it (the rifle) and then put one into the chamber.”
No shots were fired.
According to a Bend police report, Marlatt hid her vehicle about three blocks from the home and waited in a dark bedroom for her husband to walk in. Her husband told police his wife confronted him with a loaded rifle and threatened to kill him. The police report says she threatened to kill her husband and then herself.
The couple struggled over the rifle as her husband called 911. Her husband eventually gained control of the rifle, fled the home and met arriving police officers outside.
Marlatt was released from jail earlier this year after posting $2,500 security on her $25,000 bail.
Marlatt and her attorney could not be reached for comment.
