An avalanche along state Highway 58 prompted authorities to briefly close the highway Friday afternoon, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The avalanche occurred about 11 miles east of McCredie Springs in Lane County.

The highway reopened at the Salt Creek Tunnel after ODOT crews cleared snow that had slid onto the highway.

ODOT said travelers should expect delays or possible highway closures due to “increasingly severe weather” Friday night, including heavy snowfall and blizzard-like conditions.

Officials warned that the weather could force closures elsewhere on Highway 58, on other roads across the Cascade Mountains and along Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge.
