A plot twist on horizon worth ‘Billions’

Q: Will Chuck and Axe remain partners when “Billions” returns?

— Jack Brennan, Reading, Pennsylvania

A: It sure looks that way. We’d never purport to guess what the clever writers and producers of the Showtime drama have in mind, but unless there’s a massive flash-forward that puts the characters at odds again, the forthcoming Season 4 is likely to start with Axe (Damian Lewis) and Chuck (Paul Giamatti) still looking to each other for the expertise the other man can provide … both encouraged by Wendy (Maggie Siff), Chuck’s wife and Axe’s adviser.

Chuck surely will want to turn the tables on U.S. Attorney General Jock Jeffcoat (Clancy Brown), who fired him from his New York legal post. And Axe definitely wants to get even — and more — with his former hedge-fund employee Taylor (Asia Kate Dillon), who set up a rival firm while stealing a deal that was guaranteed to keep Axe Capital afloat. Whatever ultimately happens, the next round of “Billions” is virtually certain to be loads of fun to watch.

Q: I read that the character Cristal will no longer be in “Dynasty” when it returns. Is that true?

— Louisa Shore, via email

A: Evidently, since that word has come from someone who certainly would know … the actress who has played the part on the CW reboot, Nathalie Kelley. She has said she will not be going back to Atlanta film the drama’s second season, and the first-year cliffhanger set up that possibility, since she had been shot as well as trapped by a fire.

Whether this means Cristal has died or is hospitalized indefinitely remains to be seen — but her exit still is something of a surprise, since the Blake-Krystle-Alexis struggle was so much a part of the original “Dynasty.” Nicollette Sheridan joined the new version late in its freshman round as Alexis, and especially under these circumstances, she presumably will have much more to do when the show resumes.

Q: I’m fascinated by Alice Braga, who stars in “Queen of the South,” but I don’t hear much about her. What other work has she done?

— Dan Potter, Boynton Beach, Florida

A: The Brazilian actress had her first big break in the 2002 movie “City of God,” then “Lower City” brought her a slew of international film awards three years later. That led her into roles in big-budget productions including “I Am Legend” (with Will Smith), “Predators” and “Elysium” (with Matt Damon).

If her last name seems familiar, those who think so might suspect acting runs in Braga’s family — and they’d be right. Fellow performer Sonia Braga (“Kiss of the Spider Woman”) is her aunt, and Alice’s mother Ana also is an actress.

Q: I’ve seen “Yankee Doodle Dandy” several times lately on Turner Classic Movies. Was George M. Cohan still living at the time it was released?

— Jean Bader, via email

A: He was, but he was near the end of his life then. He had been a consultant to the 1942 musical biography, which earned James Cagney an Oscar as master showman Cohan, and Warner Bros. shifted the release from July 4th (when Cohan actually was born, just as the song “Yankee Doodle Dandy” says) to the preceding May to ensure that he would see it.

One irony, though, is that Cohan wanted someone else to play him … namely, Fred Astaire, who turned down the part because he felt he had a much different dance style. Cagney had a similar background as a song-and-dance man, though, and all obviously turned out well.

Q: I’ve been seeing repeats of the Don Johnson show “Nash Bridges” on Heroes and Icons. Did that come after “Miami Vice”?

— Peter Kirby, Columbus. Ohio

A: “Nash Bridges” premiered on CBS in 1996, seven years after “Miami Vice” ended its NBC run. Though it had a relatively unceremonious debut, slipping onto the schedule as a midseason replacement, “Nash” proved to have staying power — lasting six seasons as a Friday-night staple.

Notable co-stars included Cheech Marin (who also worked with Johnson in the 1996 movie “Tin Cup”), Jeff Perry (who would go on to co-star in “Scandal”), Annette O’Toole, Jodi Lyn O’Keefe and Cress Williams (who now has the title role in The CW’s “Black Lightning”).
