Bend’s Marshall High School was placed on lockout this afternoon after a report of a man carrying a firearm while walking past the school, according to Bend police Lt. Jason Maniscalco.
Police responded to the school shortly before 2 p.m., when it was reported that two men were walking north on NE Fifth Street, and one of them was carrying a rifle. The man was not observed pointing or menacing anyone with the rifle, Maniscalco wrote in a news release.
Officers searched the surrounding area for the rifle-toting man. They learned that a man matching the reported description lawfully purchased a rifle from the nearby Cash Connection. The lockout was lifted after about 20 minutes.
As of this evening, there was no evidence of a crime, Maniscalco wrote, but police were attempting to contact the man with the gun, whom they did not identify.
