Bend golfers head to U.S. Open qualifier — Several Central Oregon golfers will compete today at the 2015 U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Eugene Country Club in Eugene. Bend High graduate and former University of Oregon golfer Andrew Vijarro, Pronghorn head professional Jerrel Grow, Awbrey Glen head professional Tim Fraley, Summit High graduate and accomplished amateur Jesse Heinly, and former Tetherow club champion Taylor Garbutt are all scheduled to compete with some of the top professionals and amateurs in the Northwest to make it past the first stage. There are 155 entrants competing for nine spots, with players advancing moving on to the sectional qualifying stage. The Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Washington, will be the closest sectional qualifier for those that advance.

Bandon Dunes gets U.S. Amateur for 2020 — The USGA has named Bandon Dunes Golf Resort the host for the 2020 U.S. Amateur, the sixth time it will host a major USGA championship since 2006. It will be the first U.S. Amateur hosted by the resort, which has four courses that have all hosted major amateur championships. The last championship held on the Bandon Dunes course was the 2007 U.S. Mid-Amateur. Pacific Dunes has hosted two major amateur championships, including the U.S women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship last week, while Bandon Trails and Old MacDonald hosted the men’s and women’s 2011 Amateur Public Links championships. The courses to be used for the 2020 U.S. Amateur will be announced at a later date.
