Pujols to DL — Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols was put on the disabled list Sunday with a tear in his left foot that could end his season. Manager Mike Scioscia said the star will be sidelined for “a significant amount of time.” Pujols has a partially torn plantar fascia, an injury that has bothered him most of the season. He aggravated it while running out a single in the ninth inning of Friday’s 6-4 loss to Oakland. “This is something that, talking to Albert, has been going on for six or seven years,” Scioscia said before the Angels’ game against the Athletics. “It’s been going on for a long time and he’s managed it. This is a big blow to our team right now.” Although surgery seems unlikely, Scioscia didn’t rule out the possibility that Pujols could be sidelined for the rest of the year. Pujols left the team and returned to Los Angeles on Saturday morning for additional testing. That’s when the injury was diagnosed. The three-time NL MVP, who signed a $240 million, 10-year contract with the Angels as a free agent in December 2011, has served as the club’s designated hitter most of the season. Pujols was hitting .258 with 17 home runs and 64 RBIs before re-injuring his foot.

Ravens: TE Pitta out for year — Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta is lost for the season after undergoing hip surgery, a major blow to the team’s bid to repeat as Super Bowl champions. Pitta was hurt Saturday, the third day of training camp, when he collided with safety James Ihedigbo in the back of the end zone while going for a pass from Joe Flacco. He was operated on Saturday night. Pitta was one of the centerpieces of the Ravens’ offense during their run to a Super Bowl championship last season, and he was expected to take on an even bigger role this season after Baltimore traded top wide receiver Anquan Boldin during the spring. The 28-year old Pitta, a fourth-round pick of the Ravens in 2010, had 61 catches last year.
Broncos lose center — Denver Broncos center Dan Koppen is out for the season after tearing his left ACL on Sunday in 9-on-7 drills, less than six weeks after rejoining Denver following J.D. Walton’s setback in his comeback from ankle surgery. Koppen, an 11-year veteran who played his first nine seasons with the Patriots, was caught in a pile early in the workout and was carted off the field and taken for an MRI, which revealed the season-ending injury.
Jets Ryan talks QBs — Rex Ryan isn’t sure what all the fuss is about. Sure, general manager John Idzik wouldn’t say the coach has the final call on determining the New York Jets’ starting quarterback. But Ryan is on board with that, and insisted he always has been. “I think you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill, to be honest with you,” Ryan said Sunday. “Ever since I’ve been here, and this is my fifth year here, not one decision has ever been made by one man. Not one decision. And that’s whether it’s who’s up, who is active, who’s going to be the starter at this and this, who we draft. It’s always a group effort on what is best for this team.” On Saturday, Idzik raised some eyebrows when he repeatedly said the quarterback decision — along with other roster spots — would be a “collaborative effort.” He insisted that he, Ryan and others in the organization talk constantly as they evaluate the entire roster. But, the final call on whether the quarterback is Mark Sanchez or Geno Smith won’t be Ryan’s alone. “There’s a lot of teams in this league where the head coach does not have the final say on who makes the 53-man roster,” Ryan said.
Tennis
Cibulkova wins at Stanford — Dominika Cibulkova avenged one of the worst losses ever in a WTA Tour final, outlasting Agnieszka Radwanska 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to win the Bank of the West Classic on Sunday in Stanford, Calif. Seven months after failing to even win a game against Radwanska in the Sydney final, Cibulkova came out aggressive and put the top-seeded Radwanska on the run. Cibulkova, seeded third, overcame two service breaks in the final set — both on double-faults — to win the final four games.
Robredo routs Fognini — Tommy Robredo won the Croatia Open clay-court event Sunday in Umag, beating Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-0, 6-3 for his 12th career title and second this year. The Spaniard won the opening set in 18 minutes, losing only six points. Fognini broke Robredo twice in the second set but could only hold serve once himself.
Isner wins Atlanta — Top-seeded John Isner won the Atlanta Open on Sunday, beating second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) in the tallest final in ATP history. The 6-foot-10 Isner, who lost in the Atlanta final in 2010 and ’11 to fellow American Mardy Fish, won his seventh career title. Anderson is 6-foot-8. Isner rallied to win two tiebreakers, pushing his ATP-best tiebreaker record to 27-6. All three sets were played on serve, and Anderson lost serve only once in four matches. In the third tiebreaker, however, Isner scored off Anderson’s first, third, fourth and fifth serves to win 7-2.
Youzhny takes title — Mikhail Youzhny won his first Swiss Open title on Sunday on his eighth attempt, beating Robin Haase 6-3, 6-4 in Gstaad, Switzerland. The sixth-seeded Youzhny broke unseeded Haase’s service once in each set to clinch his ninth career title, and third on clay courts.
