Goody’s

Editor’s note: Things change frequently in the restaurant business, and this article was written more than one year ago. The menu, service, atmosphere and quality may have changed.
Walk into Goody’s, Bend’s own ice cream shop, soda fountain and candy purveyor, and the sweet smell of confection hits you upside the head like a double-chocolate truffle.
Goody’s, with two shops in Bend, one in Sunriver and two in Idaho, is meant to invoke the feeling of an old-fashioned soda fountain, says Marion Palmateer, who founded the company with her late husband, Marne, in 1982.”We’re trying to give (customers) an experience,” Palmateer said.
And so it is. Sit at the ornate cast-iron bar stools and order your favorite treat at the shiny wooden counter. Watch the staff create sculptures of great, gooey goodness.
Goody’s ice cream sodas are laboriously made, using homemade ice cream, syrups and soda water. Ice cream can come in homemade waffle cones or dishes. A real heart-stopper is Linda’s Love, a delectable sundae with chocolate almond ice cream, homemade cherry topping, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. The newest addition to the savory menu is a darkside bar, featuring dark chocolate, and an otherside bar, flavored with milk chocolate.
Goodies at Goody’s take longer than the average fast-food milkshake to prepare, but, Palmateer asks, where else can you get a real ice cream soda or a sundae in a fancy glass dish?
Not most places. Soda fountains are a dying breed, according to Palmateer.
In addition, no trip to Goody’s would be complete without at least a glance at the rows of candies available by the pound, from handmade chocolates to jelly beans to sour fruits and jawbreakers.
