General Motors is recalling 2.4 million more vehicles, the automaker said Tuesday, bringing its total recalled in the United States this year to more than 13 million.
The announcement was the latest setback for the company, which began in February with the recall of millions of older-model small cars for defective ignition switches. The defect has been linked to 13 deaths.
The four actions announced Tuesday will result in a $400 million charge, the company said, including about $200 million for five other recalls disclosed last week. Those actions covered about 2.7 million vehicles.
The largest new action affects about 1.3 million vehicles: the 2009-14 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia, as well as the 2009-10 Saturn Outlook.
The automaker said the front seatbelt cables “can fatigue and separate over time.” That could allow the lap belt to come loose.
One million cars are being recalled because the four-speed automatic transmission could be in a gear different than what the driver thinks because a shift cable could wear out. The models recalled are the 2004-08 Chevrolet Malibu and 2005-08 Pontiac G6.
The other actions involve about 1,402 2015 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV sport utility vehicles, recalled because the passenger-side air bag might not fully deploy in a crash, and 58 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups, because a fuse box may be loose. That could lead to a fire.
