The term “old soul” seems ready-made for Texas songwriter Dale Watson. For close to three decades, Watson has bucked Nashville’s trends in favor of the sounds he grew up with from artists such as Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell and more. He even started his own genre, Ameripolitan — encompassing honky-tonk, rockabilly, Western swing and outlaw country — that has spawned a music festival and the Ameripolitan Music Awards (ameripolitan.com). Just don’t call Watson a nostalgia act. He has released at least one album per year since 1995, channeling his demons (including the death of girlfriend Terri Herbert in 2000) into rich storytelling songs delivered in his signature baritone and authoritative guitar playing. Watson will team up with local favorite and like-minded artist Wayne “The Train” Hancock at Volcanic Theatre Pub on Thursday.
Dale Watson and Wayne “The Train” Hancock: 8 p.m. Thursday; $20; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; volcanictheatre.com or 541-323-1881.
