Memphis, Tennessee, punks Ex-Cult sound as if they were made for this moment in time in the U.S. The five-piece, led by former Vile Nation frontman and journalist Chris Shaw, can be unrelentingly bleak in its outlook, as attested on its ferocious third album, 2016’s “Negative Growth.” The band’s raw, raucous instrumental attack is in a similar vein, recalling such classic old-school punks as The Damned or Dead Kennedys, albeit dripping with stomp-box fuzz. But there’s catharsis in the band’s raging screeds. Cohorts of prolific San Francisco D.I.Y. rocker Ty Segall (also Shaw’s bandmate in GØGGS), Ex-Cult will rock Volcanic Theatre Pub on Sunday with Bend doom rockers Zarlok opening.

Ex-Cult, with Zarlok: 8 p.m. Sunday; $10 plus fees in advance, $12 at the door; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; volcanictheatre.com or 541-323-1881.
