The Oregon Ducks reportedly have found their new defensive coordinator.
Oregon is set to hire Boise State defensive coordinator Andy Avalos for the same position with the Ducks, according to multiple reports Tuesday.
Avalos has been the Broncos’ defensive coordinator for three seasons, and prior to that he was an assistant coach at Boise State since 2012. He played linebacker for the Broncos from 2001 to 2004.
The Idaho Statesman’s Dave Southorn was the first to report Avalos’ move.
Avalos will replace Jim Leavitt, who parted ways with the Ducks two weeks ago. Leavitt, who was making $1.7 million per year and had three more years left on his deal, agreed to a buyout with Oregon for $2.5 million.
At Boise State, Avalos had two years left on his contract and was slated to make $350,000 per year.
Under Avalos’ direction, the Broncos ranked 39th in FBS in total defense in 2018, allowing 355.9 yards per game. The Ducks, by comparison, ranked 55th this past season, giving up 385.9 yards per game.
The Broncos’ defense was 10th in the nation in sacks and 20th in turnovers forced in 2018, and Boise State recovered a nation’s-best 17 fumbles to go along with four defensive touchdowns.
Boise State’s defense was ranked 22nd in the nation in 2017, and Avalos worked with Mountain West Conference defensive player of the year Leighton Vander Esch, who would go on to be a first-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys.
Mario Cristobal and his Oregon team encountered Avalos’ defense in the 2017 Las Vegas Bowl, and the Broncos held Oregon to 47 rushing yards and 280 total yards in a 38-28 victory.
Oregon is coming off a 9-4 season and a Redbox Bowl victory over Michigan State in 2018. The Ducks are set to begin spring practice next week.
