Lomachenko takes decision over Campbell — Vasyl Lomachenko added the vacant WBC belt to his WBA and WBO titles at lightweight with a unanimous points win over Britain’s Luke Campbell on Saturday. Lomachenko, among the world’s greatest pound-for-pound fighters, struggled at times to combat Campbell’s longer reach but finished stronger and knocked the Briton down in the 11th round after a flurry of body punches. Two judges awarded the fight 119-108 to Lomachenko, with the other giving it to the Ukrainian 118-109. Only Ghana’s Richard Commey, who holds the IBF title, stands between Lomachenko and a sweep of the 135-pound belts. Commey is set to fight mandatory challenger Teofimo Lopez Jnr. in December, and perhaps Lomachenko after that.

Earnhardt puts aside plane crash to run at Darlington — A joyful Dale Earnhardt Jr. returned to the racetrack Saturday, finishing sixth in the Xfinity event at Darlington Raceway a little more than two weeks after he and his family escaped a plane that crash-landed in Tennessee and went up in flames. The race was a welcome relief from thinking about the crash for Earnhardt and his family. He hopped in his car after kissing wife Amy and 16-month old daughter Isla, and his driving skills kicked in as he moved up from 14th place. “It’s just good to be at the track,” Earnhardt said. “I can’t count how many people give me a warm feeling when I see them at the track. This is good therapy.” It was Earnhardt’s only race this season and his first since finishing fourth in Richmond almost a year ago.
FIGURE SKATING
14-year-old American lands rare move in competition — Alysa Liu became the first American woman to land a quad in competition when she hit her signature quadruple lutz during a dominant free skate to win the Junior Grand Prix on Saturday. Liu opened her program with the tough triple axel, landed a triple lutz-triple toe combination and then a sequence that included a triple lutz and a triple salchow. The result was a free skate score of 80.14 for the 14-year-old American, nearly 14 points ahead of Yeonjeong Park of South Korea. Liu also won the short program to finish the Grand Prix with 208.10 points. Park was second with 186.58 points, and Russia’s Anastasia Tarakanova edged South Korea’s Seoyeon Ji by 0.03 points for third. Only a handful of women have landed quads in competition. Japan’s Miki Ando was the first in 2002, landing a quad salchow at the Junior Grand Prix. Russia’s Alexandra Trusova was the first woman to land the more difficult quad lutz during her free skate at the Junior Grand Prix last year.
