Bend Tech Academy student brings airsoft gun to school

A Bend Tech Academy student brought an airsoft pellet gun to school Tuesday. After a community tip, school administrators, counselors and the school resource police officer spoke with the student and determined there is no credible threat to the school community.

An airsoft gun is a highly realistic replica of a real gun that shoots plastic projectiles. They can be made of plastic, die-cast metal, aluminum or steel.

Bend-La Pine Schools called the event a “safety incident” and said all students were safe in a message to parents and families.

“Open communication and trusting relationships between staff and students throughout the district and partnership with law enforcement have created conditions that support the safety of our school community,” wrote LaKisha Clark, Bend Tech Academy principal, in a letter to families. “In situations like this, we depend on our trained staff to utilize our protocols, procedures, and policies to respond quickly and keep our community safe.”

Clark said resources and support would be provided if requested.

The incident occurred a day after a Pilot Butte Middle School student brought a loaded handgun to school and told a teacher about it. The 12-year-old was arrested.
