REDMOND — Tyson Oliver had the Adrian Irwin Memorial circled on his schedule.

After placing second in the long-standing Central Oregon wrestling tournament a year ago, the Mountain View sophomore was determined to leave Ridgeview High School Saturday afternoon a champion.

But to do so, he had to get past a teammate, freshman Nate Jones, whom he defeated 6-3 in the 122-pound finals.

“This was redemption,” Oliver said. “It’s also my first varsity tournament that I’ve won. I’ve had quite a few second places.”

Oliver and Jones wrestle every day in practice, and Oliver usually wins by a point or two.

“We’re pretty evenly matched,” Oliver said. “I’ve won all the wrestle-offs. He just wrestles really tough.”

Seven Cougars advanced to finals and five won their weight class to edge Redmond 307 to 291.5 for first place in the two-day, 19-team tournament.

Returning from a broken thumb, Mountain View’s Beau Ohlson pinned all five of his opponents at 147 pounds, including Burns’ Dawson Williams in the finals, to win in his first tournament of the season.

“It was nice getting Beau back in our lineup and that was probably a big key to this (win), getting him back in our lineup,” Mountain View coach Les Combs said. “He’s just such a solid, great wrestler. He just creates a real good core for our team.”

Blake Ohlson, Beau’s twin brother, defeated Culver’s Cylus Hoke 6-3 to win the 197-pound title.

Mountain View also won at 162 pounds, where Carson Fassett defeated Madras’ Victor Torres 13-8, and at 172 pounds, where Colton Burkhardt topped Redmond’s Clayton Elrod 8-0.

The Cougars will take 17 wrestlers to the Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno, Nevada, next week.

“It will be a good test for us at a big tournament,” Combs said.

Kris Davis, coach of Class 5A Redmond, was not satisfied with just wrestling 6A Mountain View close.

The Panthers had come to the Adrian Irwin to win it.

“Anytime we wrestle we expect to win and that’s the attitude that we have,” Davis said. “We’ve got a lot of things to work on. We are not there yet. We’re just never satisfied. I’m happy for kids that performed well. We had some good individual performances but as a whole we need to be better.”

Redmond senior Jacob Curry pinned Grants Pass wrestler Elliot Harris 39 seconds into the 140-pound finals.

“I thought we were going to go (all three) rounds,” Curry said. “I just stayed inside and got in good position and he just kind of gave it to me. I don’t think he saw it coming and I just set it up and it worked out good for me. It feels really good to pin him that fast. I expected to win but I didn’t think I was going to win as easy as it was. I’m really hyped. I’m really excited.”

The Panthers also got a pin in the first round by Trae Bolken over Culver’s Anthony Hood in the 134-pound finals. Redmond sophomore Kagen Lawrence pinned La Pine’s Dylan Mann to win the 115-pound weight class.

Redmond will compete in the Northwest Duals next week in Albany, with the Oregon Classic and Reser’s Tournament of Champions on the horizon.

“We’ve got a hellish schedule coming up,” Davis said. “We’ve got a lot of wrestling coming up that’s going to push our limits. We’ve got to make sure we’re ready.”

Culver, which finished fifth with 214.5 points behind Grants Pass and Burns, put four wrestlers in the finals but had only one champion as Lorenzo Vasquez defeated Redmond’s Landon Robinson 9-2 at 128 pounds.

“I’m pretty happy with our performance,” Culver coach J.D. Alley said. “We could have wrestled better in the championship round.”

La Pine and Ridgeview each had one champion. La Pine’s Caremlo Farfaglia pinned Culver’s Brody Piercy in the 108 finals. Ridgeview’s Cole Jackson then defeated Bend’s Nathan Denney 13-6 for the 184-pound championship.

On Friday, Bend recorded 117 points to win the Adrian Irwin girls tournament. La Pine finished second with 102 points.
