Q: Is Sophia Bush really leaving “Chicago P.D.”?
— Doug Ryan, via email
A: What initially seemed like a cliffhanger that could last until fall is proving to be true. Indeed, after four seasons, the founding cast member of the NBC drama is making her exit from the show, having given that impression after her character — police detective Erin Lindsay — faced a review board in the recent season finale, then bolted before her colleague and on-and-off-boyfriend Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) could propose to her.
Although the series obviously is set (and filmed) in Chicago, it seemed possible that the new season could have started with Lindsay working the new job she apparently is taking in New York, as a member of an elite FBI unit. Consider that executive producer Dick Wolf has a crew working in the Big Apple on the continuing “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and though it might have been logistically tricky for that staff to work on two shows at once, there was a way to pull off those scenes. Nothing definite had been said as of this writing, but it’s always possible that Bush could return for a “P.D.” guest appearance (or more than one).
Q: Will “Training Day” continue without Bill Paxton?
— Mark Welsh, Sacramento, California
A: No, and it’s not a surprise. Even before Paxton’s untimely passing in February, the ratings for the spinoff of the Oscar-winning movie hadn’t been great. Soon after that, CBS announced that the show would move from Thursdays to Saturdays, typically an indication that a series will be finishing out its run on that night — and that’s what came to pass, since it officially was canceled last month.
Q: I heard a rumor that “Last Man Standing” is being canceled. I hope this is not true!
— Karen Gaines, St. Clairsville, Ohio
A: It is. Although producing studio 20th Century Fox Television and ABC usually came down to the wire in agreeing on renewal terms for the Tim Allen sitcom, it didn’t happen this time. The network cited the decision not to keep a comedy block on Fridays as the reason for the cancellation, but after six seasons, the cost of making the show (including salary increases) only was getting higher.
Allen tweeted that he was “stunned and blindsided” by the move. However, the studio reportedly was looking for other avenues by which to continue the series, bolstered by the outcry of fans such as you.
Q: I’ve heard that “The Catch” is not coming back next year. It’s been one of my favorite shows for the last two years. Please tell me it’s not ending that way.
— Nancy Butterfield, via email
A: Sorry, we can’t. Though the ABC show underwent a considerable creative overhaul for its second season, its ratings still weren’t of a sufficient level for the network — particularly being part of the massively promoted “TGIT” collection of Thursday shows from executive producer Shonda Rhimes — and it was canceled.
ABC likely doesn’t want anything negatively impacting the viewing numbers for what will be the final season of “Scandal,” so that also was a factor. The firefighter-oriented “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff and the law drama “For the People” that the network has ordered from Rhimes haven’t been assigned slots on the schedule yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised at all to see them join that Thursday lineup, and the absence of “The Catch” hypothetically opens up that hour for them.
Q: Will “Zoo” be back this summer?
— Jennifer Adams, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
A: It will, and with a big time jump. When the CBS suspense drama — based on a novel co-written by James Patterson, who’s one of the show’s executive producers — resumes on June 29, it will be set in the year 2027, and the principal animal threat to what’s left of mankind (including the characters played by returnees James Wolk and Kristen Connolly) will be “hybrids” created in laboratories … determined to end the human race for good.
