Glass shatters at Bend ice rink

One of the glass panels surrounding the ice at The Pavilion was smashed by an errant hockey puck Saturday.

Frank Baldwin, of Bend, took this photo shortly after the incident, which occurred as he was watching his adult son, John Baldwin, play in a hockey game.

Baldwin said his son was playing goalie, and the rink had been divided in half to allow for two games simultaneously. A shot sailed past both the goal and the younger Baldwin, striking the glass just above the side boards on the north side of the rink.

The puck bounced back onto the ice, but the impact broke the glass into hundreds of pieces, which fell both onto the ice and into the spectator area on the other side of the boards.

Baldwin said the shards were not particularly sharp, and he was able to pick them up easily without cutting himself. Ice rink employees replaced the broken glass, he said, and the games were able to continue.

Representatives of the Bend Park & Recreation District, which operates the rink, did not return calls seeking comment Monday.
