Wawrinka wins Monte Carlo Masters — Stanislas Wawrinka won the Monte Carlo Masters for the first time Sunday in Monaco, rallying to beat Roger Federer 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 in a rare all-Swiss final. The Australian Open champion had lost his previous two Masters finals and looked to be losing a third until Federer’s level dropped suddenly late in the second set, and Wawrinka began troubling the 17-time Grand Slam champion with his aggressive backhand. The fourth-seeded Federer, who accepted a wild card invitation to play in the tournament, was also looking to win it for the first time after losing his three previous finals here to eight-time champion Rafael Nadal from 2006-08. Wawrinka has beaten Federer only twice in 15 matches but both victories have come here. He also beat him in the third round in 2009.

Vekic beats Cibulkova for first WTA title — Seventh-seeded Donna Vekic of Croatia clinched her first WTA title on Sunday after beating top-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the Malaysian Open final in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 17-year-old Vekic, playing in her third final, prevailed in a match that stretched to almost three hours.

France edges U.S. 3-2 in Fed Cup — The doubles team of Caroline Garcia and Virginie Razzano led France to a 3-2 win over the United States in Fed Cup competition Sunday in St. Louis. France qualified for the World Group in 2015 and will compete for the Fed Cup championship. The USA drops down to World Group II for next year. Garcia and Razzano beat the USA’s Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys 6-2, 7-5 in the fifth and deciding match of the best-of-five, two-day competition held at Chaifetz Arena on the campus of Saint Louis University.

Belgium’s Gilbert wins Amstel Gold — Philippe Gilbert of Belgium won the Amstel Gold Race for the third time on Sunday, clinching the 49th edition in the hills of the southern Netherlands. Racing for BMC, Gilbert broke away from the peloton about three kilometers (two miles) from the finish during the race’s final steep ascent of the Cauberg hill, and then held on for victory as others tried to narrow the gap. Gilbert’s win in the 251-kilometer race followed his triumphs in 2010 and 2011. He finished in a time of 6 hours, 25 minutes, 57 seconds. Fellow Belgian Jelle Vanendert was second, and Australia’s Simon Gerrans third, ahead of Alejandro Valverde of Spain.
