A longtime Northwest staple for comfort food and hot coffee, Shari’s Cafe & Pies has closed its Redmond location and a number of others across the state.

As of Friday, the south Bend location on U.S. Highway 97 remained open.

In Redmond, however, the restaurant on Odem Medo Road south of downtown has permanently closed.

An estimated 20 people will lose their jobs, according to a former staff member.

The Shari’s in Pendleton also closed Thursday, and about a dozen Shari’s locations across Oregon, Washington and Idaho have shuttered their doors in recent months.

According to the company’s website, the Beaverton-based chain has 95 locations across Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Wyoming and Nebraska, but that number has shrunk due to closures.

The offices for Shari’s Management Corp. in Beaverton are listed as “temporarily closed” online in its business listing on Google.

On Aug. 26, The News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington, reported that the Idaho State Tax Commission has six liens against Shari’s Management Corp. for roughly $220,000 in unpaid taxes and noted debts to various vendors including marketers, construction firms and plumbers.

Shari’s Restaurants started in Hermiston in 1978 as a family operation.

It was acquired in 1999 by Fairmont Capital for $60 million.
